In 2007 I photographed two
weddings in the Dominican Republic.
One was in Punta Cana and the other at Puerto Plata near the
town of Sosua.
Driving a rental car from
one end of the DR to the other and back, will definitely rank
as one of the more interesting, challenging and memorable experiences
of my life.
There were moments when I felt lucky to have survived, and others
when I felt blessed for having the chance to experience it.
The resorts, the beaches and the people I met were all wonderful
and I would love to go back,
but next time I might not rent a car.
One wedding was at the Sivory Resort in Punta Cana and the
other was at a large and very beautiful Villa near Sosua.
Both were really incredible locations for a Destination Wedding
.
While in Punta Cana, I stayed at a very small family owned
"hotel" in a very rough neighborhood.
The people I met there were amazingly happy even though they
lived in extreme poverty. We Americans don't get to see real
poverty very often. A young boy of about 10-12 yrs old was
in charge of the entire hotel (about 5 rooms) and he did a
really
good job of taking care of everything. When I paid him for
the first night, he immediately took off at a full run and
dissapeared around the corner and down the alley. I thought
I'd just been ripped off for sure. But a few minutes later
he returned with a bag of groceries and he quickly had some
chicken & dumplings with noodles cooked up - which of
course he demanded to share with me. The realization that
this kid was that hungry - was a real shocker for me.
Later that night, I sat up on the roof with him and his brothers
an sisters, talking about their lives and watching the everyday
drama of the neighborhood.
Meeting people like this and experiencing their lives for
a few hours is one of my favorite parts of
the Destination Wedding Photography job.
