Note from a Texas bride to a new bride....

Ilissa,

I am happy to answer any of your questions and am glad that you have taken the time to contact me.

Glen was truly one of the best decisions that I made regarding my wedding. When I found his work, I knew right away that I had to have him and we were able to work out the details quickly and easily.

Glen and I did not communicate a lot before the wedding. When ever I would contact him, he would always respond right away but we just set it up – made the date and it was “a go” after that.

He collected ½ my payment up front, to hold the date and the second ½ right before the event. Now I have to tell you, I usually would not do a thing like that (pay for services in advance) but I truly did trust him and wanted to make sure that I could secure him for my wedding. Well, all went off as planned without a hitch. We were married just 2 months ago in Marathon Texas. (Glen likes to do destination weddings, and since he has some family in Texas he was able to visit them as well!)

(I have a website about my wedding – there are no wedding pictures there…yet, but if you want to look it is www.keithandtricia.info)

My destination was a place called the Gage Hotel. And although it was not like being at a big island somewhere, it was remote and there was a lot of travel involved to get out there. I called him the week of the event, made sure he had no other questions, explained what my expectations were (what time, where to meet, how to get in touch with me) and left for west Texas to get ready for the big day.

Glen was perfect, showed up on time, exceeded all my expectations, and seemed really interested in making sure he was getting the shots I wanted. He was always right there for the “big stuff.” I had a list of specific group shots that I wanted and we took those, but the rest was left up to his creative eye and imagination.

He is not a “POSE NOW” photographer. What you get is just like you see on his website. I did not want a ton of group photos and posed pictures. (If there are some you want, just let him know) but he does not line you up, move you to the right position and make sure everyone’s head is tilted in the right way. He shoots what he sees and what you will want to see for the rest of your days...

My pictures though, are AMAZING. He was able to capture all the joy and emotion of my event, with a style that is rarely seen. He was very participatory but also very laid back. Most of the time, I forgot he was there!! I spent more time with Glen the day of my wedding than I did with my groom, and I felt very comfortable with him. We chatted alot and he is very nice and easy to get along with.

I have not had an album made yet – but since you get a high resolution copy of your photos, the options truly are endless. I love the hardcover books that he offers on the website, but I just got my disc about 10 days ago and there are so many pictures to choose from it is really hard to decide which ones. Over 90 percent of the photos he took were beautiful and technically perfect. As you know - the pictures we like best of the ones that show us in our best light, and he did exactly that. I truly truly would not change a thing – he gave me so much more than I ever expected or dreamed. And he did it at what I would call a very fair price.

The one thing I would say is this. After the wedding, you only have two things that truly live on forever, your ring and your pictures. Get the best photographer you can find (sometimes that does not mean the most expensive) someone who’s work you appreciate as an art form and someone you trust. It is a little more difficult to get to know him, because you don’t get to meet him face to face, but I trusted glen with my photographs and I have never, not once - regretted that decision.

Best of luck to you on your big day! I will try to forward some quick shots of my wedding in a little while so you can look at a couple of the pictures that have meant so much to me…

Sincerely,
Tricia Dalton (McGee)

My name is Glen Johnson and I'm a wedding photographer.

I live in a beautiful place called the Willamette Valley, in Central Oregon. From that home base, I travel the world shooting weddings for clients that care deeply about having their wedding day captured as a story, told by an artist.

I absolutely LOVE what I do. I love meeting new people, making beautiful art with cameras and computers, and traveling around the world. Sometimes I think I'm the luckiest person in the universe for having found this profession.

My style is to shoot quietly and unobtrusively in the background throughout most of the day, and then work with you to create unusual and dramatic portraits when we've got a few minutes alone. My greatest compliment is when a bride looks through the photos and says, "I didn't even know you were there when that happened."

Your style is bold, fun loving, adventurous and totally in love with your new partner. You appreciate photography as an art and you want an outgoing, friendly photographer that you feel comfortable hanging out with. You don't want to worry about being embarrased by an egotistical photographer who tries to take over your day. You're not looking for the cheapest photographer - you're look for quality and you expect it to cost a bit more. Finding a photography who can tell a story with a camera is of the highest priority to you. You shudder at the thought of seeing your own faces in the cheesy wedding photos that are so typical these days. And you don't just want 50 4x6 prints when it's all over. You want a LARGE collection of great images, and you want natural, unstaged moments that tell the story of your day.

As a new bride shopping photographers, do I have some advice for you!

First of all, when you interview a photographer, perhaps the single most important thing to know is that it's very easy for new or average quality photographers to buy a fancy website that makes them look as good as the really great photographers - at first glance.

The thing to remember is that most photographers will pick out their favorite 20 images from each wedding and show those on their website, but that should leave you wondering what the heck they were doing for the rest of the 10 hours during that day.

You need to know that any beginner can get 20 good shots during a 10 hour day.

So don't ask a photographer to "Show me your best picture."

What you should be asking them to do, is.... "Tell me a story." And believe me, there is a HUGE difference between the photographers that can get 20 decent shots, and those that can get the hundres of great images it takes to tell the whole story of your day.

Here are some other things you should know about shopping photographers... 1 2 3 4

The slideshows in the links above tell stories. Each show is but a small collection of the images taken at that wedding, and I hope you'll agree that each show tells the story of the day.

I look forward to the day I get to capture your story.
